Altaïr’s Notebooks
A good question is worth more than an answer
How to support a student’s reasoning, one question after another.
When a student runs into a difficulty, it is very tempting to give them the answer straight away. We want to help, to keep them from getting discouraged and to let them move on. Yet an immediate answer does not always help them understand how they could have found it.
A well-chosen question can open up another path: “What do you already know?”, “How could you get started?”, “What do you notice in this problem?” These prompts give the student a chance to draw on what they know, examine the information available and build their reasoning.
The aim is not to leave them alone with a difficulty. It is to strike the right balance between the help they need and the space that allows them to think.
At Altaïr Education, this idea is at the heart of our approach to homework help. The tool favors questions that help the student build their reasoning, and it can also explain a concept that has not yet been mastered. The aim is to support their understanding, not just to produce a correct answer.
A mistake can become a starting point for revisiting a step, examining a hypothesis or understanding what led to a result. Not all students need the same level of support. Some need a first lead, others need the instructions rephrased or broken down.
Learning to think takes time. It means being able to try, hesitate, get things wrong and start again.
Altaïr is a complementary educational tool that can help students make progress in this process, without replacing the teacher or the dialogue with the adults who support them.
