Helping your child without becoming their teacher
When homework time begins, parents can find themselves in a delicate position. They want to help, but they do not want to do the exercise for their child. They want to explain, without turning every evening into a private lesson.
Supporting a child does not necessarily mean knowing all the answers. It is sometimes more useful to help them understand the instructions, recall what they already know, or identify the first step.
A question like “What are you being asked to do?” can help them restate the problem. “What have you already tried?” lets you take stock without judging. And sometimes, a short break is all it takes to get back to work in better conditions.
Not all children need the same kind of help. Some want reassurance; others need an extra explanation or easier-to-read material.
Altaïr Education can offer practical support during homework. This digital tool does not replace the parent and does not know the child’s whole story. It can, however, help go back over an exercise and support understanding when relevant.
The goal is for the child to gradually understand what they are doing, try things on their own, and ask for help when they need it.
