Gifted (HPI) children and learning: nurturing curiosity without boxing them in with a label

By the Altaïr Education Team2 min read

Giftedness, known in French as “haut potentiel intellectuel” (HPI), is sometimes associated with preconceived ideas: a student who understands everything very quickly, who is always bored, or who necessarily needs a special method. The reality is far more diverse.

A gifted student may be very curious about some subjects and less interested in others. They may grasp one concept quickly while struggling in another subject. Like any student, they have their preferences, their strengths and their moments of doubt.

For some gifted students, the joy of learning comes from being able to ask questions, make connections or explore an idea in depth. Understanding the point of an exercise can be as important as knowing how to solve it.

Altaïr Education seeks to support this curiosity by offering help with schoolwork while leaving room for reasoning. It's not about systematically speeding up their progress or assuming that all gifted students have the same needs.

The right question remains this one: what helps this student, today, to understand and move forward?

A digital learning tool does not define a student's potential, but it can help give them the means to explore and develop it. By offering tailored learning paths, it can help them understand the meaning of what they are learning, dig deeper into their questions and make connections between different areas of knowledge. It then becomes a complementary support that goes beyond helping with learning: it nurtures curiosity, encourages independence and cultivates the joy of understanding.
